Zero-Click Searches: What They Mean for Your Business

Explains the rise of zero-click search and AI overviews, and what companies can do to maintain visibility when users never reach their website.

More than 60% of Google searches now end without a click.

That number has been rising for years and accelerated significantly with the introduction of AI overviews — the generated summaries that now appear at the top of many search results before any traditional links.

For businesses that have built their marketing around driving organic search traffic to their website, this is a structural change worth understanding. Not an emergency, but a shift in how the value of content is created and captured.

What Zero-Click Actually Means

A zero-click search is one where the user gets the answer they were looking for directly from the search results page — without visiting any website.

This happens through several mechanisms:

Featured snippets. Extracted excerpts from web pages, displayed prominently above traditional results. The source gets attribution (and some visibility), but often no click.

Knowledge panels. Pre-formatted information boxes covering well-known entities — companies, people, places. Often satisfies factual queries completely.

AI overviews. Google's generative AI summaries that synthesise multiple sources into a direct answer. Growing in prevalence and sophistication since 2024.

Local packs. Map results with ratings, addresses, and phone numbers — often the last click a local search query needs.

The common thread: Google increasingly answers the question itself rather than directing users to find the answer.

What You Lose — and What You Don't

The obvious loss is traffic. If your content is being used to answer a query but the user never visits your site, you lose the pageview, the engagement metric, and the conversion opportunity that visit might have created.

For businesses that monetise traffic directly (ad-supported media, for example), zero-click results are a direct revenue impact. For businesses that use content to generate leads, the picture is more nuanced.

What you lose: the direct conversion path from article to enquiry.

What you might retain:

  • Brand visibility and recall from the attribution in featured snippets
  • Authority signals that contribute to overall search credibility
  • The visitor you still get when the query requires deeper engagement than a summary provides

What zero-click actually clarifies: the queries that result in zero-click answers are predominantly informational. They're questions that have direct, satisfying answers — and people were always going to leave quickly after getting them.

The queries that drive commercial value — "best Webflow agency for B2B startups," "how much does a brand redesign cost," "agency that specialises in X" — these typically still require clicking through to evaluate and compare. Commercial intent queries aren't easily satisfied by a one-paragraph AI summary.

The Strategic Response

The practical implications of zero-click search aren't as dire as the headline statistic suggests — but they do require a strategic adjustment:

1. Optimise for queries with commercial intent, not just informational ones.

Informational queries ("what is brand strategy") are increasingly zero-click. Commercial queries ("brand strategy agency for SaaS startups") still drive clicks and conversion. Balance your content investment accordingly.

2. Capture the attribution value of zero-click results.

Being cited in an AI overview or featured snippet is not nothing — it's brand visibility for every user who sees the result, including many who will remember your name when they're ready to engage. Optimise for appearing in these results even if the immediate click doesn't follow.

3. Invest in non-Google discovery channels.

LinkedIn, industry publications, newsletter sponsorships, partnerships, events — channels where the discovery mechanism isn't Google search reduce your exposure to changes in how Google distributes traffic.

4. Make content that earns direct return visits.

When readers get genuine value from your content — insights they can't find summarised elsewhere, perspectives that make them think differently — they come back. They subscribe. They recommend it. These relationships are zero-click-proof.

The Bigger Picture

Zero-click search is part of a broader shift: the internet is becoming more summarised. AI systems are increasingly the first interface, not the last.

For businesses with strong brand authority, consistent expert positioning, and content that demonstrates genuine depth, this shift creates opportunity — their brands get cited, recommended, and recalled even without direct traffic.

For businesses with thin, generic content producing forgettable answers to common questions — the shift is genuinely challenging. The traffic that was marginal to begin with is disappearing.

The answer isn't to stop creating content. It's to create better content, for more specific audiences, with commercial intent in mind.
